Marissa Jo is an NAACP Image Award and two-time Humanitas Prize winning television writer and producer who has spent her career focusing her creative efforts on projects that explore the intersectionality of the human experience through character-driven and female forward stories, such as the ABC limited series WOMEN OF THE MOVEMENT. In addition to her WOMEN OF THE MOVEMENT pilot script winning the NAACP Image Award and the Humanitas Prize, the series was honored as the “Best Limited Series” by the African American Film Critics Association and The Gracie Awards.
More recently, MJ was honored for her Hulu series BLACK CAKE, by winning the 2024 Humanitas Prize in the Drama Teleplay category. The show was honored as “The Best in TV” from the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE) and also nominated for a GLAAD Media Award, two NAACP Image Awards, and a Gotham TV Award. MJ served as Creator, Showrunner, and Executive Producer on BLACK CAKE, along with Kapital Entertainment and Harpo Films.
Her new original series BIRTHRIGHT is currently in development at Netflix.
She recently co-wrote her first children’s book with her child Esme.
